WAM Students - Winter 2010
Events Photography Please note this is a working page to discuss issues that arise during the class shoots. Not final images.
WAMStudents/Web/web.jpgThis photo has nice even lighting esp. considering it was shot with a flash at such a great distance. WAMStudents/Web/web1.jpg This is pretty good but the photographer was a little low so the bounced flash is illuminating the top of the subject better than the bottom. Good angle of view. WAMStudents/Web/web2.jpg This photo is a nice classical shot of a guy playing the guitar. Unfourtunatly he is making an unpleasent face. Not to say that is not sometimes desired. For example if this were Billy Idol we would expect such a face. It is also shot a stop or two too low and the flash went off faceing forward on a camera with a side mounted flash. You can tell by the way the shadow is cast to the right. WAMStudents/Web/web3.jpgThis shot has the wrong whitebalance. Flash will come out blue if the white balance is set on tungstun or daylight white balence. With the white balence corrected it would be a simple room shot - good for documentation but not a memorable shot. WAMStudents/Web/web4.JPGThe lighting on this shot is nice. The FStop might have been too big (2.8 or 3.5 maybe)If you used a smaller fstop like 16 or 22 then each person would be in focus.
WAMStudents/Web/web5.JPGThis is a good example of where a two step bump up in flash compensation could have helped. Also using a center exposure would have worked better than evaluative. WAMStudents/Web/web6.JPGThe foreground lighting for this shot is pretty good but the concern is the darkened background. A longer shutter speed could have allowed the background to be better lit and the flash would still have frozen our foreground subject. WAMStudents/Web/web7.JPGThis is another a good example of where a two step bump up in flash compensation and using a center exposure could have helped. Although the tilted angle is more interesting than a straight shot this effect should be used with caution. I have seen many good photographs ruined because the objects/people look like they are falling off the page. WAMStudents/Web/web8.jpg Cute kid. Good candid shot but very ordinary. The flash compensation needed to be increased to counter act any type of flash filter or increase the fstop one stop. Otherwise the light is pretty even - was it bounced? WAMStudents/Web/web9.jpgAnother shot where the foreground lighting is good but the concern is the darkened background. A longer shutter speed could have allowed the background to be better lit and the flash would still have frozen our foreground subject.
WAMStudents/Web/web10.jpg Classic shot. I like the crop and angle. It states exactly what you would expect from a guy playing the guitar. Movement is frozen nicely but I think we could have used a higher Fstop to get a little more light into the camera. WAMStudents/Web/web11.jpgThis is a great product shot using pattern and movement. The composition is good but I would like to see an interruption to the pattern - a hand or wine glass maybe. This was also the most colorful objects in the room. I also like the lighting WAMStudents/Web/web12.jpg Great attempt at framing but the background subject is not interesting. Therefore, having the foreground in focus was a good decision but again they are not that intetresting.A longer shutter speed could have allowed the background to be better lit and the flash would still have frozen our foreground subject.
